Scratched,damaged iPhone restored with sandpaper

iPhone are scratch-resistant, but life throws some tough stuff at our phones. One MacRumors user, owning a phone that looks pretty beat, demonstrates the full process of restoring his phone with sandpaper and a new LCD kit.

The poster makes a point of noting that on most phones, you’ll only want to use a rougher sandpaper to tray and remove 90 percent of the scratches, not get to a completely clean and polished look—with the scratch-resistant coating completely removed—as shown at the full post. For those looking to completely refinish their phone, there’s a very informative post on the technique of wet sanding, along with tips on taping up your controls and glass and polishing off the finished result. For those with cracked or deeply scratched glass, there’s a replacement guide included, too.

It’s a cheap process and not too much time, especially if you don’t plan on upgrading to a new model any time soon (ha!). While you’re at it, you can also try giving your bezel a brushed look.

Microsoft’s Aaron Woodman just pulled off a little surprise here at The Engadget Show: he brought out LG’s Windows Phone 7 Series pre-production prototype! The QWERTY slider is the first branded Windows Phone 7 Series device the world’s ever seen, and while the hardware and software are both obviously early, we can tell you a few things about it: it’s just a hair thicker than an iPhone or Nexus One, there are dedicated hardware camera, volume, and power buttons in addition to the back, home, and search buttons dictated by Windows Phone 7 Series, and we noticed a five megapixel camera with a flash on the back, along with a headphone jack. Can’t say much apart from that right now, since things are so early and everything is subject to change, but things are certainly moving along. It’s all going down on the show right now — see it on video after the break!

Motorola Devours (video)

We’re only a few breathless days away from the Devour hitting some retail locations ahead of nationwide US availability in March, so what better way to fill that gap than with an official teaser video? Moto’s Rick Osterloh is our tour guide in a seven minute hands-on demo of the device, which takes us through the major attractions on offer. He firstly calls out the Qualcomm CPU inside and points to the phone’s responsiveness, which is (quite naturally) followed by a couple of instances of perceptible lag between his input and the phone’s reaction. All the same, it does look like a sprightly little machine, and the inclusion of Blur, Google Maps Navigation with turn-by-turn voice instructions, and Moto Phone Portalmakes for a compelling software package. Head past the break to see them in action and to catch another eyeful of the hardware as well.

How’s about a little smartphone love on Valentine’s Day? Samsung’s press conference just got underway in Barcelona, and one of Mobile World Congress‘ first smartphones to debut this year is a real doozy. The Wave (S8500) that we’ve heard so much about lately is finally official, and it’s the first handset to ship with Bluetooth 3.0. It’s also packing 802.11n WiFi, TouchWiz 3.0 and the company’s own Bada mobile platform. You’ll also get a 3.3-inch “Super AMOLED” (saywha?) display, and while the 800 x 480 resolution is just dandy, the lack of multitouch is a real buzz kill. Digging into the internals, you’ll find a 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, aGPS, accelerometer, 2GB or 8GB of internal storage space, a microSD expansion slot, multi-codec support for DivX, XviD, MP3 and WMV, and support for virtual 5.1 surround sound and 720p recording / decoding. The company’s also touting its mDNIe (mobile Digital Natural Image engine) technology, which is already used in its LCD and LED TV lineups; in other words, this phone is probably one of the better ones for multimedia viewing (so long as you don’t venture under direct sunlight, of course). It’ll be available worldwide starting in April, but unfortunately pricing remains a mystery. Full specifications and press release are after the break.

Update: Check out our hands-on with the device! The at show prototypes do respond to multi-touch pinch and zoom… with an error. But at least the detect it.

Samsung’s first Bada phone with AMOLED announcement in February 14

By now you’re undoubtedly aware than Samsung has a new smartphone OS (Bada) and touchscreen technology (Super AMOLED) in the works. In this case, putting 2 and 2 together yields 14, a number that matches Samsung’s February 14th press event at Mobile World Congress. How so? Well, first of all, Sammy is promoting the Samsung Unpacked teaser page from its Bada site. The ocean-themed teaser (“bada” means “ocean” in Korean) says, “on 2.14 a new mobile from Samsung is born. See it first in Barcelona.” A quick look at the teaser site’s source reveals the keywords “Bada,” “smartphone,” and “AMOLED.” In other words, you can bet that Samsung will be unveiling a 3.3-inch, 800 x 480 pixel Super AMOLED (already rumored for a next week reveal) touchscreen Bada phone on February 14th.

P.S. The image above comes courtesy of GSM Arena. While the site won’t say what the device is on the left it’s clearly running Samsung’s Bada UI and is likely AMOLED judging by those deep blacks. The display is also slightly smaller than the iPhone 3G’s 3.5-inch display. Gee… what could it be?
