MSI WindPad 100 10-inch, Intel Atom-powered Windows 7 tablet

Oh, hello WindPad! MSI just took the wraps off its 10-inch, Windows 7 tablet during the company’s Computex press conference. The tablet is powered by a 1.66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 2GB of RAM, and packs a 32GB SSD that boots Windows 7 Home Premium, though MSI has created a Wind Touch UI layer. While they were showing early prototypes, it will have two USB ports, an HDMI and a webcam when all is finalized. According to an MSI product manager on hand, the WindPad 100 will hit the market later this year for around $499. We just caught a few minutes with the tablet so hit the break for some early impressions and a short hands-on clip.

The 10-inch tablet is made entirely of plastic — it does feel quite cheap, but on the other hand it’s incredibly light (it’s only 1.7 pounds). The prototype they had out didn’t have any of the final ports, but eventually it will have an HDMI jack that should be able to output 720p video to an HDTV. Our biggest concern about the tablet comes with the speed. We noticed it taking a few seconds for applications to launch, and the Wind Touch UI was incredibly sluggish. Speaking of the interface, it’s just a basic skin on top of Windows and should provide easy access to applications. The 1024×600-resolution capacitive display did seem responsive, though we would have rather it had a higher resolution.

Now here’s a spec sheet maven’s dream: MSI has just announced its new Wind Top all-in-ones, and the top model brings every modern spec you can think of. Full HD resolution, 3D capabilities with 120Hzrefresh rates, Intel processors up to Core i7, and even multitouch adorn its list of goodies. The new flagships will be known as the Wind Top AE2420 in the 24-incher category and AE2280 in the 22-inch class. They’re joined by a selection of high-efficiency machines, such as the AP1920 and AE1920, which promise to cut down the electricity bills for “environmentally-minded business users.” That’s still hardly scratching the surface, though, as MSI is really preparing a small army of AIOs to display at CeBIT, and you can bet the house we’ll be there to touch and ogle at their latest and greatest.

MSI Wind Sliding Tablet Mod – Videos

Early this week, netbooked.net discovered a new tablet mod brewing on the Insanely Wind forums. The modder’s plans are to mod his Advent 4211c (MSI Wind U100 clone) into a slate tablet with a sliding pull down keyboard. He now has a bunch of videos up showing off his work, still a WIP though.

The videos show off Windows 7 and OS X use with a stylus (single touch resistive touch screen) and progress on the sliding mechanism for the pull down keyboard.

MSI dualscreen e-reader

The all metal device is about the size of a netbook and it actually felt quite heavy in our hand. On the inside of the dual 10-inch, capacitive multitouch screens work like extended displays and we were able to drag windows from one screen to the other. The entire thing was a bit flaky since it’s obviously running some beta software, but the digital keyboard was easy to pull up and had a haptic-like feedback when we started typing on the bottom screen. The whole thing is pretty damn awesome for a very early build, and the fact that MSI actually plans to bring it to market within the year is pretty unbelievable.
