Yes, YouTube Is Down (But You Can Still Watch Videos)

source – techcrunch.com/ by Robin Wauters

The Wikipedia site doesn’t often go down, but yesterday it did. It’s also unusual for YouTube to suffer downtime, but since approximately 7:05 AM Eastern time visitors to the homepage have been greeted with an error message that simply reads “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable” or a 500 Internal Server Error message.

Seriously, what is the world coming to?

Fortunately, videos still play on sites where they are embedded, and when you head directly to dedicated video URLs you should be able to watch them without a hitch (example).

In the meantime, there’s so much chatter about it on Twitter that the words ‘Service Unavailable’ actually graduated to a Trending topic.

We’re awaiting a response from Google about the extended homepage downtime.

From Plan B Arquitectos (Felipe Mesa) + Giancarlo Mazzanti, project V House is located in Sabana de Bogotá, Colombia and comes with a fantastic architecture. Its design was inspired by the molecular glass structure, which gave the building its specific geometry while its overall feel carries the owner’s lifestyle. We don’t know about you guys, but for us this place is the ultimate symbol of freedom while living large. The house looks like a dream crib, no matter what the angle of view. The exterior features impressive terraces and breathtaking views. Inside- an unusual display of modern furniture, music instruments and original shapes. Have you ever seen so much diversity and style in one place?-via Arch Daily

OpenTablet 7 by OpenPeak

source – gottabemobile.com

OpenPeak, a company that develops multimedia devices for OEMs, has introduced a new open-platform tablet called OpenTablet 7. Following the trend of numbering devices based on screen size, it is a 7″ tablet device that promises to be “the ultimate control panel”. Per the press release, here’s what it offers:

Powered by Intel’s next generation handheld and tablet platform, codenamed “Moorestown,” the OpenTablet 7 features a high-resolution 7-inch multi-touch TFT LCD screen with LED backlighting, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and cellular connectivity, HDMI output and dual cameras for capturing both high-definition video and still images. The on-board USB interface and MicroSD slot expand the device’s connectivity, while built-in speakers and microphone allow the device to serve as a fully functioning telephone and multimedia platform. At just 9 inches by 5 inches, and only .59” thick, the device is as slim and unobtrusive as a photo frame, and weighs just 1.15 pounds.

“The OpenTablet is the ultimate control panel, delivering the most commonly accessed multi-media services right to your fingertips anywhere,” said Dan Gittleman, CEO of OpenPeak. “The all-in-one device allows you to sync schedules, check movie times, listen to music, watch videos, get weather updates, and even monitor energy usage and home security, all from a single, easy-to-use device.”

Sounds impressive, but the marketing seems a little unfocused. The specs indicate a wide-mobility device, something that can be taken anywhere with an LED backlight for outdoor viewing and mobile Internet connectivity, while the CEO’s description sounds more like a narrow-mobility device, one that can be used around the home like a truly unversal remote control. No reason you can’t have both in one, but “it can do anything” type of messages often fail to hook customers. I suppose though it is up to the OEM to narrow that down and find their own hook.

Applications are built using Flash and an application marketplace is already being established. Can’t find word on OS, but I’m assuming it’s some flavor of Linux. Pricing is described as “affordable” and desktop or handset docking stations are available.

Instapaper Pro for iPad

source – wired.com/ By Charlie Sorrel

instapaper-ipad

Instapaper Pro, our favorite read-later iPhone application here at Gadget Lab, will be available for the iPad on day one. Over at the Instapaper blog, developer Marco Arment has posted screenshots and a great explanation of the problems facing developers without access to an actual, physical iPad.

Instapaper Pro for iPad will be a universal app, a bundle containing code for both the iPad and iPhone. This means that, if the app makes it through Apple’s approval channels, current Instapaper users will never have to see a pixel-doubled version, which “sucked, and it was completely unusable by my standards,” according to Arment.

Being a simple reading application, there aren’t many differences in the interface, which is mostly just text and pictures after all. Arment was wary of making changes without being able to see them in action: “I didn’t want to commit to any huge risks because I don’t have an iPad to test them on,” he says.

The one big change is the horizontal folder view, above. All it does is expose the folders into which your articles are organized (you knew Instapaper has folders, right?), but it looks to be a lot easier and more obvious to use.

Arment plans on making more tweaks when he has an iPad in his hands, but we’re very pleased he decided to go ahead with making an untested Instapaper available at launch. We feel exactly the same way as him about the app: “an iPad without native Instapaper Pro is not a device I want to own.”

Livingstones: Modular Seating by Stephanie Marin

Several readers inquired about the pebble floor cushions featured in a recent post on the LoftFloat houseboat by Magma Design. And we can understand why. Livingstones are a modular seating concept developed by French designer Stephanie Marin that is both practical and poetic.

Amazing Spiral Staircase With Book Shelves Dezeen

Found on Dezeen, this amazing staircase is in the former home of Portuguese poet and philosopher Antero de Quental. Though he lived there for only a decade — 1881-1891 — the building was recently converted into a literary center and the spiral staircase with integrated book shelves takes center stage.

WePad Android Tablet vs iPad – according to specs WePad wins

source – phandroid.com/ by Rob Jackson

The day the iPad was launched it got two main complaints: (1) The name was atrocious and (2) It was underpowered and lacking some simple niceities. Say what you want about the WePad name – in terms of taking the closed Apple approach and bringing it to the masses with Android’s open community nature – I think “We” works very well. But more importantly, the specs rock.

wepad

With an 11.6-inch screen, 1.66GHz processor, front-facing camera, 2 USB ports, SIM slot, MicroSD slot, Flash, Adobe AIR, and ability to use all open eBook standards, the WePad bests the iPad in all of those categories. You can see the full comparison at TechCrunch.com.

But the sugar gets sweeter. In addition to all the above, you’ll be running Android and will have access to Android Market in addition to the WePad marketplace which is said to include distribution of newspapers and magazines that are optimized for the device. Produced by a German company called Neofonie and it should be available in April in Germany.

I think its safe to say the Neofonie WePad could be a HUGE hit… and if it is… there are a ridiculous number of Android lovers and unimpressed Apple-loving-iPad-haters that might jump aboard if its made available globally.

I want to acknowledge something – better specs are great, but if they can’t be offered at an affordable price, none of this will matter.

Villa in Thailand – dream on…

Amazing post on – freshome.com/ Author: Lavinia

We’ve seen a lot of home designs throughout the years and we can say there are few those that really have everything: a fantastic location, an incredible design and architecture, so on and so forth. This particular villa is located on the beach of Kamala in Phuket, Thailand and is currently up for sale, listed at a cost of $8.66 million. We found a brief property overview which states: 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a total interior surface of 739 sq meters (7,955 sq ft) and no less than 796 sq meters (8,568 sq ft) of terrace space. These almost seem like abstract figures when compared to those of a common European or American home. Moreover, the villa features an in-ground pool, a sauna, a wine room and a home theater system. Have fun strolling through the pictures and tell us if you consider this mansion to be one of those designs that has everything.-via Twisted Sifter
